How to Plant a Herb Garden with Kids
Helping kids plant their first garden is easier than you may think. All you need is appropriate sized well draining pot, some potting mix, a variety of compatible plants, and a small watering can or two.
For our first garden together we decided to plant herbs. Herbs are a great choice to plant with kids as they grow fast (kids love instant results), plus you can continue getting kids involved with a lesson on the latest farm to fork movement letting kids snip their herbs and add them to their favorite meals.
The first thing you'll need to do is fill the pot with potting mix, leaving the top of the mix 3-4″ below the rim of the pot.
Herbs LOVE water. To help make them happy and give them the best chance to root and thrive, we saturated the dirt before planting our herbs.
If your dirt settles once it's wet, don't worry. Just add a bit more dirt and water again.
Starting planting your herbs as directed on the pots. Our herbs came in biodegradable post so planting was a snap and virtually mess free.
When planting your herbs, don't forget to check the plant's height. You will want to be sure to plant the tallest herbs in the back.
Continue planting your herbs, adding additional potting mix as needed around each pot.
After all the herbs have been planted, give them one more drink of water to moisten the potting mix that was added around the plants.
Once your pot is done, enjoy a tasty treat like Tree Top Apple Sauce Pouches.
Tips on planting herbs:
- Use a potting mix versus potting soil. Potting Mix is made up of particles much larger in size than soil particles, allowing for better drainage.
- You can grow herbs in pots together as long as you remember two rules: avoid mixing those that like plenty of water (such as chives, mint, chervil, coriander, Vietnamese coriander) with those that like a well-drained soil (such as rosemary, thyme, sage, bay, and oregano).
- Basil, cilantro, tarragon and parsley also like full sun.
- Don't mix different mints in the same box because they interbreed and will produce some new and probably not as deliciously fragrant varieties.
- Parsley and cilantro are biennials, living only two years.
- Rue should not be planted near basil or sage as they inhibit each other's growth, and Fennel should not be planted near caraway or coriander.
