Easy DIY Outdoor Movie Theater and Zootopia Party Ideas
Setting up movie themed party with a DIY outdoor movie theater is easier than you think. There are so many screen possibilities from a hanging clothes line to a store-bought screen (usually less than $100), or even a make-shift screen like the one we created.
And the food and refreshments can be just as trouble-free as setting up the theater. With a little creativity, you can turn simple store-bought treats into cheerful snacks your audience will love!

Prepping the Snacks
The first snack we created was this carrot candy station. The rectangle vase filled with orange jelly beans and green lollipops resembled a fun carrot patch, and double as a festive table decoration with Judy Hopps by its side.
Next, we created a salty & sweet ‘Zoo'topia party mix. For our recipe, we used 2 cups pretzels along with 1 cups of each: animal cookies, circus cookies, goldfish, M&M's, and mini marshmallows for Bellwether's fluffy wool.
As you can see, this recipe was tested and approved by Finnick, Bellwether, Nick, and of course, Judy.
For a fun and edible craft, we created a DIY Donut Decorating table with chocolate covered donuts and pink tube frosting, and let the kids try their hand at creating their very own ‘The Big Donut'.
This was a little challenging for small shaky hands, but the kids had fun none-the-less because, what kid can't resist adding even more sugar to their sugary treat? Not mine. They definitely have my sweet tooth.
The donuts might not have turned out quite like the first, but that didn't stop the kids from having fun.
Even this girl. I don't think this girl has ever jumped up from a nap as quickly as she did to decorate her very own ‘The Big Donut'. Crazy hair and she doesn't care.
That's a big bite for her big donut!
Our outdoor table setting was simple. Fun Zootopia party supplies likes plates, cups, and napkins paired with our zoo-inspired treats served as our table decor.
We even created fun carrot utensils by wrapping green plastic tableware with orange napkins and ribbon.
Even Nick and Judy approved of these store-bought Zebra cakes the kids loved.
These adorable tiger oranges were a hit with our mammals too! To create this fun treat, simply draw a nose, mouth, eyes, ears and stripes on an unpeeled orange or cutie.
Setting up the Outdoor Theater
Since we're an avid little league family and just happened to have a Bownet lying around, we draped and pinned a white king-size flat sheet to create our DIY outdoor theater screen.
You could also hang a white sheet from a clothesline strung between two secure objects. If your sheet dangles, don't forget to add a brick to each bottom corner to keep the sheet from blowing in the wind.
Our outdoor entertainment equipment included the AAXA P300 Pico/Micro LED Projector, Ion Audio iPA77 Tailgater Portable Bluetooth Speaker PA System with Microphone, Apple Lightning Digital AV Adapter, and Amazon Basics High-Speed HDMI Cable, and setting up the theater was so easy.
(NOTE: Charge the equipment the night before the party!)
First we unboxed the ION Tailgater portable speaker, and it didn't take long before the kids found the microphone. It's amazing how a microphone can turn any kid into an instant rockstar.
This dynamic, powerful speaker system has a 50-hour rechargeable battery, Bluetooth connectivity plus iOS/Android app for expanded control, USB power bank to conveniently recharge your smartphone, tablet, and more, and an AM/FM radio with bright, clear display, and 1/8″ auxiliary input; microphone and auxiliary cable included. It's perfect for amplifying your movie for the entire audience.
Next, we opened the AAXA P300 Pico/Micro LED Projector, a plug and play unit with instant set-up, built-in speakers, and an adjustable tripod. Video can be played via HDMI, VGA, Composite A/V connections along with microSD, and USB readers, and can project up to 120-Inch image (in low-light condition).
We love the convenience of the Disney Movies Anywhere (DMA) app, if you haven't tried it you really should. It really the easiest way to connect and watch your favorite films anywhere and how we always watch our movies on the go.
Playing Disney's Zooptopia through the DMA iPhone app takes just three simple steps. First, plug the Apple Lightning Digital AV Adapter into a compatible phone, then connect the Amazon Basics High-Speed HDMI Cable between the adapter and the projector. Finally, select the Zootopia in the DMA app and hit play. Yes, it's really that simple.
If you have a large crowd and want to amplify the movie a bit more, plug the projector into the ION Tailgater speaker. You may want to set the unit on a small table to project over the kid's heads.
You can play a movie from the projector as soon as dusk sets, but the picture won't be as bright as it is at night. I highly suggest playing a movie at night, even if that means putting the little ones down for a nap so they can stay up late.
You can always kill time with a little improvised comic relief from mom and dad or even an impromptu kid's talent show, and snacks. There's always room for more snacks.
And snuggles. Snuggles are good too.
And once it gets dark, be ready to enjoy the show! With 1080p/1080i/720p resolutions available from this projector, 300 lumen, 2000:1 Contrast, Vibrant Color Technology with 15,000 hour LEDs, you'll be amazed at how clear the image shines on the screen.
Disney's Zootopia is now available on Blu Ray, Digital HD, and Disney Movies Anywhere! Pick up your copy today and create your own easy DIY outdoor movie theater event like we did!
