Coming Tuesday, January 31st to Blu-Ray is Walt Disney Animation Studio's 2nd animated film ever made: Pinocchio. In anticipation of the re-release of this classic film on Blu-ray, I and some other fellow bloggers got to have a more up-close look at the original art of the film during a Pinocchio special event at the Animation Research Library.
Pinocchio Special Event Celebrating the BluRay Release
A Visit to the Animation Research Library
Disney's Animation Research Library is a place operated by Disney where any piece of art from Walt Disney Animation Studios films (i.e. storyboard art, concept art, pieces of celluloid) is stored. These priceless pieces are treated with the utmost respect, with the 65 million art pieces being housed in vaults that are perfectly temperature controlled and monitored so that the pieces can be preserved in the best condition possible.
One part of the Pinocchio special event Animation Research library tour that we saw that was particularly astounding was original artwork from Pinocchio – seeing hand drawn and hand painted works by Disney animators from 1940 really gives you a deeper appreciation for the craftsmanship involved in creating these films.
Interviewing Pinocchio Historians
Later on, we were able to interview two people who are experts on Disney's Pinocchio. Fox Carney is the Manager of Research at the Animation Research Library and has been a part of the Library for the past twenty-one years.
Pinocchio is one of just a handful of films that Carney has had the chance to look through and study every single piece of art within the library. Carney discussed how one of his favorite things about researching the pieces was to discover what was removed from the film. He said that it is always interesting to find something new, something deleted from the finished film. Another fascinating thing Carney taught us about the Library was that computer animation artists today use resources from the Animation Research Library to study 2D animation techniques for poses, emotions, and other animation tricks and tools.
Afterward, we interviewed J.B. Kaufman, who is a film historian who is the author of Pinocchio: The Making of the Disney Epic.
J.B. Kaufman definitely knows the ins-and-outs of Disney's Pinocchio, having worked nearly six years on compiling his book that contains an extensive history of the film. Kaufman was inspired to write a book on the history of Pinocchio since it is one of his top favorite Disney films, and feels it is a major technology milestone in the world of animation. He went on to discuss how Pinocchio refined the standard of character animation and helped create principles that animators still use today. The film overall brought a new level of technology into this format of filmmaking. Even after researching the film for years and having seen it many times, Kaufman loves that he still noticed new things about the movie every time he watches it.
