How to Beat Summer Boredom
Keep A Routine
Summer is an easy time to slide out of any sort of routine where one day melds into the next and nothing gets done. Our kids don’t have to get up and get ready for school, so motivating showers and combing hair becomes more difficult.
Assembling some sort of loose schedule or routine is helpful to combat the arguing over showering and chores. Using a checklist is a good way to keep track of what your kids are accomplishing and eliminates the need to tell them the same thing every single day. They just check their checklist.
Include Outside Time
Getting outside in the summer can be a little more difficult due to heat, but wasting days inside leads to more and more arguments and whining and fighting.
Choose times that are cooler outside like in the morning or in the evening. Including water play is a great way to get outside and beat the heat. Sprinklers, water balloons, and wading pools are fun ways to include water play right in your own backyard.
Include Chores
Kids being home all the time means kids making messes all the time. Am I right? Summer is the perfect time to introduce or even increase chore load. They have no school assignments and more time on their hands to be a productive member of the family.
Assign chores to your kids based on their abilities. Remember that you need to teach the chore a few times before your kids will be ready to tackle it on their own.
Include Creative Time
Kids need time to be creative. Make sure to encourage them to do something creative whether it is drawing, writing, LEGOS, singing, making a craft, or using clay or playdoh to create something.
Make sure you create a space and remind them to try something new. Have them help you brainstorm some creative ideas they would like to try then make sure they have the supplies ready to try those ideas.
